Weve expanded opportunities for the kids, such as offering intramural basketball and softball. And as recess breaks have become shorter and shorter due to academic pressures, Chesterfield School made an extraordinary effort to preserve recess as a way of keeping its students active.Anytime they can do something physical, even just running around the school yard, they love it, observes Hammett. Physical activity is its own reward. In addition to offering healthier foods during meal times and encouraging exercise that is fun, Chesterfield School has regular wellness-related assemblies that help to educate the students and keep them fired up about their own health and well-being, he says.Marlborough School: Cultivating a Taste for Healthy FoodA t Marlborough School, lunch time is not just about eating a healthy meal, its also about expanding the students culinary palette. The Wellness Committee created taste tests during the school lunch period, says Kristen Hill, a member of the Marlborough School Board. So far they have tried roasted chick peas, black bean salad, black bean brownies and blueberry/pomegranate/kale smoothies. The taste tests have been a real hit with the students and staff, and all recipes are available on the school website so students can make them at home, says Hill. And, for the second year in a row, as part of the curriculum for the middle school students, a vegetable garden is sprouting during the summer. Harvests are sent home with some students in the summer program, says Hill The school, with the support of the principal and staff, has also made adjustments to its recess policy to allow for more physical activity for the students, says Hill. Overall, the changes the Wellness Committee has brainstormed have been well received by everyone at the school. The majority supports the initiatives, says Hill. The students like to have more active time, the fruits and vegetable day has always been popular and students are asking for the recipes from our taste tests. We had a good turnout for the walk-to-school day, which was very encouraging, as families had to decide to participate, and this shows they are thinking about healthier choices for their children.www.healthymonadnock.org 21'
